Positive Material Identification (API-578)

Welcome to Pro-Surve Technical Services

Pro-Surve Technical Services provides certified Positive Material Identification (PMI) inspectors to perform external inspections on new or existing assets, at your facilities within your time frame. Our inspectors can perform both a single inspection at your request or provide a multitude of inspectors for a shutdown or turnaround performing multiple inspections within a short duration.

Pro-Surve’s qualified positive material identification inspectors perform inspections, as required by the API-578 Positive Material Identification Code. This code advocates (PMI) for ferrous and non-ferrous alloys during the construction, installation, maintenance and inspection of new and current process equipment. This is applicable to metallic materials bought for use either directly by the owner/user, or indirectly through distributors, fabrication facilities, and installation of these materials.

API-578 identifies seven areas of consideration and general concern in material verification, mainly relating to systems that are most vulnerable to corrosion. Pro-Surve’s inspectors know which assets are in danger of corrosion and what elements should be tested, which is vital to establishing an effective maintenance program, by utilizing the latest technology.

PMI testing can be conducted three different ways:

Laser-Inducted Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS)
LIBS is powerful analytical PMI technique that utilizes a laser to ablate the surface of a sample, which causes it to emit characteristic wavelengths of light that the analyzer can detect and indicate the elemental content of. LIBS analyzers are simple to use and available as a portable handheld device.

X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF)
XRF analyzers can perform PMI by utilizing X-Ray technology to excite the surface the sample, which then emits fluorescent X-rays that are unique to each element. XRF analyzers are easy to use thanks to their point and shoot capability and are a non-destructive tool that provides immediate results.

Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES)
OES utilizes electricity to excite the sample to create a reading, to create a reading which means it is necessary to obtain a hot work permit and in bad weather, it cannot be used outside. OES is a destructive as it melts the surface of sample a small amount. OES, similar to LIBS, can sense carbon, however, unlike LIBS and XRF, a hand -held instrument is not available and needs greater expertise to operate.

Pro-Surve’s API-578 inspectors each have a broad and sharp knowledge base when relating to the maintenance, inspection, and repair of facility assets.

All Pro-Surve inspectors have been certified through the American Petroleum Institute's individual certification program (ICP).

Each Pro-Surve inspector is required to have knowledge and experience in the following:

  • API 510 Pressure Vessel Inspection Code
  • API RP 571 Damage Mechanisms affecting equipment in refinery industry
  • API RP 572 Inspection of Pressure Vessels
  • API RP 576 Inspection of Pressure Relieving Devices
  • API RP 577 Welding and Welding Inspection and Metallurgy

Additionally, each of Pro-Surve’s pressure vessel inspectors have knowledge in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspection code:

  • Section V – Non-Destructive examination
  • Section VIII, Division 1 - Pressure Vessels
  • Section IX - Qualification for Standard for Welding Brazing and Fusion procedures

Whether you need a Maintenance Inspector, Reliability Inspector, Turnaround Inspector, or an Inspection Planner, Pro-Surve has the proper Inspectors to get your job done right… because we said that we would.

Pro-Surve is large enough to serve, yet small enough to care.
